At the end of each Maths lesson when you are working on Algebra, please complete this check in to let me know how you are going, and what I can help you with: goo.gl/forms/JMZtk2ZrogcGFzxx1
What is Algebra?
Before you begin, you need to make an Algebra Journal in Google Slides, in your Maths Folder. You will be collecting work in your journal, and I will be checking it regularly to see how it's going. For now, just make a new slide show and give it a heading.
Understanding Variables:
Save a copy of this "Algebra Vocabulary" document in your Algebra Journal. Fill in the definition and examples.
You may need to go back to the videos again, or look up the definition to help.
Writing Algebraic Expressions
1. Maths Online. Watch the video and complete the questions and worksheet: "Generalised Arithmetic" 3235
2. In your Algebra Journal, write an algebraic expression for each of the following shopping stories. You need to include the story as well as your answer. (You could screenshot the questions to do this). Heading for the slide: "Writing Algebraic Expressions".
(The first one has been done for you.)
a = apples b = bananas c = carrots
1. Sophie went to the shops and bought 4 apples, 2 bananas and 5 carrots.
Algebraic Expression: 4a + 2b + 5c
2. Jimmy bought 3 apples, 6 bananas and 14 carrots.
3. On the shelf at the green grocers was: 42 apples, 55 bananas and 22 carrots.
4. Coles bought 240 apples, 148 bananas and 267 carrots.
5. The farmer sold 1214 apples, 947 bananas and 3768 carrots.
For the following algebraic expressions, write a short shopping story (like the ones above).
1. 6a + 2b + 5c
2. 17a + 21b + c
3. 823a + 76b + 1029c
Combining Like Terms:
Maths Online: "Like Terms" 3220 - Watch the video, complete the questions and the worksheet.
Choose any two of these questions to record in your Algebra Journal. (Heading for the slide: "Combining Like Terms"). Choose questions that were a bit challenging but that you were able to solve. (This could be a photo of your handwritten working out, or type your working out straight in to the journal).

Have a go at the questions at the bottom of the page.
Maths Online: Watch the video, then complete the questions and worksheet:
Addition and Subtraction 1: 3221
Addition and Subtraction 2: 3222
Multiplication: 3223
Division: 3224
Have a go at the questions at the bottom of the page.
Maths Online: Watch the video, then complete the questions and worksheet:
Addition and Subtraction 1: 3221
Addition and Subtraction 2: 3222
Multiplication: 3223
Division: 3224
Choose three questions from any of these Maths Online worksheets to record in your Algebra Journal. (Heading for the slide: "Simplifying Algebraic Expressions"). Choose questions that were a bit challenging but that you were able to solve. (This could be a photo of your handwritten working out, or type your working out straight in to the journal).
Simplifying - Distributive Method
Maths Online: 3229 "Grouping Symbols" (Watch the video then complete the questions and worksheet).
Simplify the following expressions in your Maths book. Make sure you write out the question and solve it one step at a time. Please make sure you hand your book in to me when you finish these questions so I can check your work!
Connect 4:
Use this gamesheet below to play Connect 4. You can use the sheet digitally and colour in the rectangles with the answers you have found, or print it and play with a hard copy. All working out needs to be completed in your Maths book, neatly so I can understand it when I check it. (You can play with a partner or by yourself, challenging yourself to aim for 4 in a row.)
Choose any three questions involving the distributive method to record in your Algebra journal. (Heading for the slide: "Simplifying - distributive method"). Choose questions that were a bit challenging but that you were able to solve. (This could be a photo of your handwritten working out, or type your working out straight in to the journal).
Substitution:

Substitution 1 (3212)
Substitution 2 (3213)
Solve the following questions in your Maths book:
Choose one of these three levels of questions below to solve in your Maths book (they get harder from left to right - but you can do all of them if you want to!) Make sure your working out is neat as it will be going into your Algebra Journal.
Upload a photo of your work into your Algebra Journal, with a heading: Substitution
